India and Europe build bridges over Ukraine divide

Modi's recent tour deepened defense and trade ties with eye on China

NEW DELHI -- India's differences with the West over Russia's invasion of Ukraine do not appear to be hindering its diplomacy, analysts say, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent trip to Europe setting the stage for increased cooperation on everything from trade to green technologies to defense.

New Delhi's refusal to condemn Russia, its longtime defense and strategic partner, and abstention from key United Nations votes on the war have put it at odds with Western countries that have sanctioned Moscow. Attempts to press India to take a stronger stand have proved futile, with Modi's government limiting itself to calls for a cease-fire and dialogue. But India and Western allies have a shared interest in checking China in the Indo-Pacific region.
