BEIJING -- A clash between residents and authorities in China's Sichuan Province forced a county government to suspend shale gas extraction on Monday, possibly setting back President Xi Jinping's campaign to move the country away from coal.

Over 1,000 people gathered in Rongxian county to protest the project amid growing fears that several recent major earthquakes, which have killed two since Sunday, were caused by shale gas extraction in the region. The protesters destroyed metal fencing put up by authorities, sources say.
