HSINCHU, Taiwan -- Taiwan's MediaTek, the world's second-biggest mobile chip provider after Qualcomm, on Friday said it would increase research and development spending by up to $3.3 billion, on top of a previous commitment of $6.7 billion, to secure growth opportunities in artificial intelligence computing and the fifth generation, or 5G, wireless communication era.
"If we want to get ready and do well in the next generation technologies like AI and 5G, it's possible that we need to add research and development spending of another 50 billion to 100 billion New Taiwan dollars ($3.3 billion)," MediaTek Chairman Tsai Ming-Kai told a press conference after the company's annual general meeting.
