From bikes to phones, 'Made in Vietnam' grows with foreign help

Companies tap new fields, but nation needs local suppliers to reach 2020 industrial goal

Real estate conglomerate Vingroup launched its first electric motorbike in November. The company is one of several striving to help achieve the Vietnamese government's target of becoming a fully industrialized nation by 2020.

HANOI -- Vietnamese companies are branching out into new areas, in line with the government's goal of establishing the country as a manufacturing powerhouse by 2020.

Real estate conglomerate Vingroup has started manufacturing electric motorbikes and smartphones and is set to enter the car industry in June.
