Recovering from scandal, Japanese automaker steers toward growth track

Mitsubishi Motors plans to crank up SUV output at this Japanese plant.

TOKYO -- Mitsubishi Motors aims to raise its global production capacity to about 1.5 million units per year, upgrading all domestic factories and expanding Chinese facilities as it seeks growth once more after weathering a fuel economy scandal.

The Tokyo-based automaker plans to spend a total of 25 billion yen ($222 million) on the effort, which would raise output capacity by a tenth overall.
