Japan-Update

Chinese sneaker fans seen lifting ABC-Mart's 9-month profit

Customers snapped up fancy kids shoes and flocked to renovated stores

Shoe retailer ABC-Mart lured heavy foot traffic by renovating over 30 of its Japanese stores.

TOKYO -- Footwear retailer ABC-Mart's operating profit likely rose 2% on the year to around 32.5 billion yen ($287 million) for the nine months ended in November, as foreign tourists visiting Japan spent big on name-brand sneakers in flagship locations.

Sales apparently increased 5% to nearly 188 billion yen. Japanese locations reported robust revenue, driven by visitors from China and other countries. The company fortified a broad lineup of Nike, Adidas and other famous brands ahead of China's National Day holiday, a peak travel season, in what proved to be a successful strategy.
