Japan hopes to simplify process for utilizing abandoned properties

New framework will let governments decide how to use unclaimed land for the public good

Japan is trying to simplify procedures for putting unclaimed property like this one in Kobe to use for the public good.

TOKYO -- Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has drawn up a proposal to simplify procedures that allow abandoned land to be used for public works.

The ministry plans to submit legislation during next year's Diet sessions for special ways of administering idle land. The measures are aimed at making the most of land for which the owners are unknown.
