Ink maker DIC seen missing first-half profit forecast

Hard times at publishers make printing ink less lucrative

The spread of smartphones has boosted sales of liquid crystal materials.

TOKYO -- Japanese ink maker DIC's consolidated operating profit likely fell short of the company's projection for the first half ended June, growing 4% on the year to 27 billion yen ($238 million) as the profitability of ink and resin products declined.

The company's standing forecast, released in May, has profit increasing 7% to 28 billion yen. Sales are seen meeting the forecast, rising 3% to 390 billion yen.
