Hiday Hidaka's March-May profit likely rose to record

Ramen chain served broader demographic, sold more booze

The customer count at existing locations increased sharply in the first quarter.

TOKYO -- Hiday Hidaka looks to have generated about 1.4 billion yen ($12.5 million) in parent-only operating profit in the three months through May, up around 10% on the year to the highest ever for a March-May quarter.

Sales apparently grew 5% to some 10 billion yen -- reaching that level for the first time in the first quarter. The ramen noodle chain was able to attract a wider cross section of customers, including more seniors and women, in addition to the traditional target demographic of working men.
