Muji operator's profit seen climbing to record for March-May

Japan, China business driving growth despite strong yen

A Muji store in Sichuan Province in China, a nation where the chain's operator is actively expanding.

TOKYO -- Ryohin Keikaku, the Japanese company behind the Muji brand, will likely see operating profit rise 5% on the year to a first-quarter record of about 12 billion yen ($107 million) for the three months through May.

Brisk sales of household items and food in Japan are driving the growth, along with Chinese business. Revenue from operations -- the equivalent of sales -- is seen up 6% at around 93 billion yen.
