Japan-Update

Clarion's operating profit seen climbing 5% in fiscal 2017

Japanese company eyes rising demand for in-vehicle cameras

TOKYO -- Japanese car navigation system maker Clarion's operating profit is expected to rise 5% from prior-year forecasts in the year ending March 2018, owing to strong demand for in-vehicle cameras and smartphone-connected navigation devices.

The Saitama-based company will likely post around 10.5 billion yen ($95.2 million) in operating profit in fiscal 2017, with sales climbing about 5% to roughly 210 billion yen. In-vehicle cameras sales are increasing, thanks to the large number of safety systems that are used to detect pedestrians and other cars. Use of rearview cameras is also growing in commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses.
