Japan's Seibu launching affordable hotel brand

Hotel operators rethink price tags as tourists opt for private home rentals

Seibu's new hotel brand would offer lower prices than its Prince Hotels, whose Shinagawa branch is pictured here.

TOKYO -- Seibu Holdings aims to introduce a lower-price hotel brand geared toward middle-income guests in fiscal 2019, as foreign tourism in Japan rises but high lodging costs drive many visitors toward private home rentals.

The new hotel brand would be the fourth for the holding company, which operates Prince Hotels along with a range of other concerns in railways and buses. Its existing hotels incorporate eateries and party venues, while the new brand will focus on lodging. No name has been chosen, but the company may keep the "Prince" title to help boost its brand power.
