Pigeon flying high as foreign visitors snap up baby goods

Operating profit likely up 7%, hitting record for 6th straight year

TOKYO -- Japanese baby goods maker Pigeon is expected to report a 7% jump in operating profit to roughly 15.5 billion yen ($136 million) for the year ended Jan. 31, thanks to strong demand among visitors from overseas.

The profit would surpass the 15 billion yen guidance, and mark a sixth consecutive record year. Sales are seen climbing 3% to around 95 billion yen. The strong yen eroded earnings at overseas operations, but business at home more than made up for the shortfall.
