Japan sushi major Sushiro merging to fuel foreign growth

Deal gives company 30% of domestic conveyor sushi market, vital overseas know-how

The merger would create an industry giant controlling 30% of the conveyor-belt sushi market.

TOKYO -- Japan's top conveyor-belt sushi chain Akindo Sushiro and fifth-ranked peer Genki Sushi are to integrate their operations in a deal that would create a behemoth controlling 30% of the market, The Nikkei learned Thursday.

Under the planned deal, rice wholesaler Shinmei is to purchase a 33% stake in Sushiro Global Holdings, the parent company of Akindo Sushiro, to lead the integration. An announcement is expected Friday.
