Japan's Suzuki gears up plant for making lighter minicars

In-house processing of strong, light steel is focus of $45m upgrade

TOKYO -- Suzuki Motor is outfitting a mainstay plant to adapt to the auto industry's move toward lighter vehicles, consolidating the processing of strong and lightweight steel to sharpen its edge in the miniature vehicles known here as kei cars.

The Japanese automaker's investment in its Kosai plant in Shizuoka Prefecture will exceed 5 billion yen ($45.6 million), including costs of equipment already introduced.
