Retailer Aeon's 9-month profit likely rose 5%

Higher foot traffic fuels recovery at general merchandise stores

Price cuts on private-label products helped bring shoppers to stores.

TOKYO -- Japanese retail giant Aeon's group operating income looks to have climbed 5% to about 85 billion yen ($724 million) in the March-November period, thanks largely to a rebound at general merchandise stores.

Operating revenue, the equivalent of sales, likely rose 1% on the year to around 6.1 trillion yen.
