Japanese papermakers seen approaching black ink in China

Oji, Hokuetsu Kishu boosting efficiency and sales in growth market

Oji Holdings is streamlining its paper production in China.

TOKYO -- Two major Japanese paper companies are expected to narrow losses in their Chinese businesses this fiscal year and may even turn a profit there in fiscal 2017 thanks to cost cutting and sales growth.

Oji Holdings is seen with a 400 million yen ($3.38 million) operating loss in China for the fiscal year ending in March, an improvement from last year's loss of 4.3 billion yen. Hokuetsu Kishu Paper likely will slash its Chinese operating loss to one-third of last year's figure.
