Marui seen doubling rent earnings in fiscal 2016

Japanese retailer pivoting from goods to services

TOKYO -- Marui Group's rental income from retail operations is likely to jump 130% to roughly 21 billion yen ($183 million) in the fiscal year ending March 2017 as the Japanese company caters more to consumers seeking experiences over products.

The group seeks to wean itself off department stores, prone to the ebb and flow of apparel sales, and move toward a retail business model built around shopping centers.
