Yamato gets Amazon to pay 40% more for shipping in Japan

As e-commerce market grows, shipper is negotiating rates with corporate clients

Yamato has been negotiating with 1,000 high-volume corporate clients, aiming to settle on higher rates.

TOKYO -- Yamato Transport has apparently convinced global e-commerce leader Amazon.com to pay at least 40% more for shipping in Japan, helping the shipper cope as surging interest in online shopping stretches increasingly scarce workers thin.

The American e-commerce heavyweight is the Yamato Holdings unit's largest client, accounting for 10-20% of the packages it carries annually, and is said to pay around 280 yen ($2.47) for each of those shipments, or half the average rate Yamato charges. The two sides have now broadly agreed on a rate hike, and are closing in on a price of 400 yen or more per package.
