Japan looks to integrate small regional air services

Japan's transport ministry intends to engineer a reorganization of regional airlines by involving JAL and ANA.

TOKYO -- Japan's transport ministry aims to lead an effort to save small airlines by helping them consolidate operations and offer passengers more convenient connections with international flights.

The initiative will focus on creating a holding company and integrating carriers that operate minor routes, such as those providing access to islands off the coast of Kyushu or to communities in Hokkaido. This new company is expected to offer code-share flights with ANA Holdings and Japan Airlines to reduce equipment and fuel costs and boost profitability. Furthermore, the new carrier company and the two major Japanese airlines will work together to offer smoother transfers between international flights and regional services to attract more foreign passengers.
