Japan's Sojitz snags $600m-plus Indian railway order

Sojitz has received numerous orders for rail construction in India.

TOKYO -- Sojitz has won its sixth contract for work on a freight railway between Delhi and Mumbai, the trading house said Monday, marking a high point for Japanese involvement in railroad projects abroad.

The Japanese company and Indian contractor Larsen & Toubro won a roughly 64 billion yen ($616 million) contract to lay and electrify rail and install signaling and communications equipment along 125km of the line in the country's north, from Dadri to Rewari. Work will commence by March 2017, and is targeted for completion in autumn 2020. State-owned Dedicated Freight Corridor Corp. of India oversees the project and manages work orders.
