Farm equipment makers eye expanding Chinese co-ops

Kubota now makes large combine harvesters in China to meet growing demand there.

TOKYO -- Japanese agricultural machinery maker Kubota and its domestic and foreign rivals are looking to tap rising demand in China, where farm cooperatives are deploying larger machines for efficiency.

The sun had nearly set on Chongming Island at the mouth of the Yangtze River in northern Shanghai, but two elderly, suntanned women continued to operate a rice transplanter covered with a handmade roof. They planted seedlings on this day in a narrow rice paddy 50 meters wide and 1km long.
