Japan-Update

Clothier Shimamura seen fashioning 9% drop in 9-month profit

Analysts cut forecasts amid drab apparel sales, higher labor costs

Shimamura has seen tepid demand for much of its apparel this year.

TOKYO -- Shimamura's operating profit likely dipped 9% on the year to around 36 billion yen ($319 million) for the March-November period as the Japanese casual clothier endured lackluster sales and higher costs.

Sales look flat on the year at roughly 428 billion yen. Main chain Fashion Center Shimamura, which generates around 80% of the retailer's overall sales, struggled as wool coats and other items seen as sales boosters fared poorly. Wide pants and other apparel that were popular among broad age groups also wore out their demand.
