Kao set to top record profit forecast for 2017

Diapers and cosmetic sales absorb steeper marketing costs

Kao's diaper sales soared by about 30% in China last year.

TOKYO -- Kao's operating profit for the year ended December apparently came to around 204 billion yen ($1.87 billion), surpassing guidance by 4 billion yen to mark the fifth straight record year for the Japanese consumer product maker.

Robust sales of baby diapers in China, as well as strength in skincare and other pricy products, helped underpin what would be a 10% jump in profit.
