TOKYO -- Japan's main ruling and opposition parties agreed Wednesday to reconvene a special parliamentary committee on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, after a nearly week-long hiatus that has dimmed the prospect for ratifying the trade and investment pact during the current session.
With an upper house election looming in July, there is growing support in the Liberal Democratic Party-led ruling coalition for postponing the debate on ratification and TPP-related legislation until autumn rather than trying to ram these items through the Diet now.
