Disneyland sparks surge for stays in Shanghai-area private lodgings

The upcoming opening of Shanghai Disneyland is creating demand for short-term stays in private lodgings near the theme park.

SHANGHAI -- Demand for stays in ordinary homes is soaring in Shanghai now that tickets for the nearby Disneyland to open in June have gone on sale, as people seek alternatives to the pricier hotels within the resort.

Short-stay rental search platform Mayi Duanzu has many rooms touting "zero distance from Disney" and "direct access to Disney." A room in a two-bedroom condominium unit located 10 minutes by foot from a subway station about 15 minutes away from Disneyland is advertised for 350 yuan ($54.18) a night. That compares to the 850 yuan rate at Disney's Toy Story Hotel and Disneyland Hotel's 1,650 yuan a night.
