YANGON -- Escalating conflict between government troops and ethnic insurgents in the Kokang region of northeastern Myanmar has spilled over to Chinese soil. On March 14, China claimed that airstrikes by Myanmar military jets had caused civilian casualties in Yunnan Province, which shares a border with Myanmar. The Myanmar government, however, denies that its jets were involved in the bombing.

The incident and the subsequent diplomatic standoff highlight the growing tension between the two long-standing allies, adding to friction over China's massive investments in natural resources and infrastructure projects in Myanmar.
