NEW DELHI/YANGON -- Bowing to social media pressure, the government of Pakistan's most populous province has withdrawn a tax on Internet services it imposed in May.

The central Punjab Province is home to more than half of Pakistan's population of about 200 million. Its government, through a notification in May, slapped a 19.5% tax on Internet services, including third- and fourth-generation mobile services. The tax, imposed on users with monthly bills of over 1,500 Pakistan rupees ($14.73), was withdrawn on June 12.
