JAKARTA -- Google and Facebook have brought new services to Asia in the hope of attracting some of the 2 billion people there yet to use the Internet. Increasing the number of users is vital for the two leading U.S.-based online service operators, since advertising revenue accounts for most of their sales.
A joint survey conducted by Facebook and U.S.-based consultancy McKinsey & Co. shows 4.4 billion people around the world do not use the Internet and that 60% of them are in major Asian countries.
