A McDonald's outlet in Japan

NEW YORK/TOKYO -- McDonald's is struggling in Japan and around the world. The world's biggest fast-food chain's business model may have reached the end of its life span.

     Same-store sales at McDonald's in Japan declined for a 13th consecutive month in February. In January, sales plunged 38%, the largest year-on-year fall since the burger chain went public in 2001.
