Public's focus shifts to political change

A man reads about Lee Kuan Yew's death.

SINGAPORE -- Lee Kuan Yew's death marks the end of an era in Singapore. The city-state in recent times has sought to balance prosperity with political transition to usher in another wave of growth.

A former teacher recalled how his country had changed since its 1965 independence, when he was a teen. The 67-year-old lost his father when he was an infant; his mother worked at a chicken farm and raised him and his two siblings. He went to night school and earned a college degree. He now lives in a large house and has the disposable income to enjoy overseas travel.
